Velvet winter wedding dresses are a perfect choice to combine beauty with warmth. Velvet is a type of tufted woven fabric where the cut threads are distributed evenly, creating a short but dense pile with a very distinctive feel.

One of the most expensive velvets is made from silk and can cost several hundred dollars per metre.

Cotton can be used although the results are a fabric that is slightly less luxurious. Other synthetic velvets have been developed using fibres such as polyester, nylon, acetate and viscose.

Natural fibres that may be used to create velvet are linen, mohair and wool.

1. Not all velvet is the same. The cost of velvet wedding gowns will vary dramatically depending on the type of velvet you choose.
2. Adding a small percentage of lycra to velvet will give it some stretch.
3. Because of its pile, velvet can be difficult to clean.
4. There are few designers creating velvet wedding gowns and therefore buying a ready-made gown may be difficult to find.
5. If you decide to purchase velvet fabric or dresses online, be sure you are aware of the method of shipping. Creases and folds in the fabric can flatten the pile, damaging the velvet.
6. Because of the dense pile, velvet is warm - regardless of which fabric is used to create it. This can be a good thing for chilly winter evenings but may be too warm for dancing.
7. Some velvet is very stiff and results in poor draping. Be sure the style of your gown and the fabric you choose are a good fit.
8. Because velvet damages easily, it requires special care when sewing. Choose an experienced seamstress for sewing your velvet wedding gown.
