But it is not uncommon for homemade centerpieces to cost as much as something you would purchase already made. The reason for this is dependent on the materials you choose.

You will likely have to purchase them at a retail price and you may need to go to several stores (or purchase online) to get all the supplies you will need. Companies who sell centerpieces as part of their business are able to get their supplies direct from a wholesaler and can therefore make them at a lesser cost.

If you happen to be a crafty person, it is quite likely that you have many of the supplies you need on hand but making homemade wedding centerpieces isn’t always about wanting to save money:

  • Made with love. Homemade items evoke memories and a warm loving feeling. Think warm chocolate chip cookies from the oven. Everybody loves them.
  • Add a personal touch. Personalities shine with DIY projects. What better way to showcase your particular talents or present your personality.
  • Play with many ideas. With a project made at home you have the time to try a variety of designs before you finalize.
  • No need to hurry. Unless your centerpiece includes fresh florals, you can make these weeks in advance. Take your time and reduce your stress!
  • Include your friends and family. Depending on what you choose to do for a centerpiece, invite your family and friends over to help pull your masterpiece(s) together. Can a family friend make any of these inexpensive centerpieces?

Sometimes all you need is an idea and a craft shop. Check out the many simple things below that can be used to make centerpieces:

  • Jars: jam jars, mason jars, pasta sauce jars – every shape and size of jar can be used as a vase. Choose one type of flower such as hydrangeas and put a single bloom in each jar. Tie a wide silk ribbon around the jar for additional color. Simple elegance.
  • Glass Vases and Bowls: Fill beautiful vases and bowls with unexpected items such as river rocks, pinecones or Christmas ornaments.
  • Empty Tin Cans: Remove any sharp edges, fill with water and freeze then using a hammer and nail create a pattern in the tin. Remove the ice and place a tea light inside.
  • Wooden Boxes and Wicker Baskets: Fill with items from Mother Nature – holly, cedar boughs, pine cones, etc.

A homemade centerpiece project does not necessarily mean it has to be plain and minimal either. There are endless ways to express your creativity and create a memorable centerpiece – from simple to luxurious and lavish. Local craft stores such as Michaels have countless ideas to help you create the look you want.
