Cleaning Berber Carpet

by Rikki

Cleaning Berber carpet requires a somewhat different cleaning and care treatment than regular pile carpet. Due to its density it can really hold on to mess and dirt.

One of the most important things to note about cleaning berber carpet is to not use a vacuum with a beater bar or brush. This will only pull on the loops and fray the carpet. Use a dry, suction-only vacuum, and vacuum regularly to pick up surface dirt.

To remove a stain or mess, the one thing to keep in mind is that because berber is so dense you'll need to extract as much of the mess as you can before using cleaning agents and a towel. The types of cleaning agents you can use will vary depending on the type of material your carpet is made from.

Steam clean a berber carpet at least once a year to suck up all the dirt laying within it. This will also help remove any oils and keep your carpet looking new.

One beautiful thing about man-made material berber carpets is that they are generally stain and moisture resistant. If you have kids or pets, consider a berber carpet made with polypropylene instead of a natural material like wool. This will help ensure the longevity of your carpet.
