Wedding Areas to decorate:

Entrance

The entrance to your wedding is a wonderful opportunity to display your wedding theme, but it need not be expensive. Often using soft tulle draped over a doorway can provide a lovely entrance. If it is a spring theme, add a sprinkle of rose petals (or have them thrown in front of the bride on her wedding entrance by the flower girl.) Lanterns or parasols are also a lovely entrance decoration as these can be hung high in a foyer or displayed along a wall.

Of course if you are having a beach wedding, a walkway of candles, driftwood, large seashells, thongs, beach umbrellas - can set the theme;

If you are having an outdoor wedding, the entrance can be made beautifully through a set of trees or an archway covered in roses or your wedding flower.

Gift Table

You may have a gift table available at both the wedding venue as well as the reception and the decorations can be used at both of these locations as long as you ask some one to set it up in both areas. Keep this simple as the table will be packed with presents. A simple table cloth with a few items in keeping with your theme or colours will be sufficient. Use the colour of your wedding, rose petals, shells, glass vases with coloured glass stones, crystal or diy vases decorated in your theme idea.

Church/ Ceremony Venue

Once again, simplicity is beautiful. If your decorations are too ornate, it really detracts from the whole wedding. The venue is not the focus, the bride and groom are - and your guests. Keep the focus there. However, by simply adding small bouquets, ribbons, scarves, lolly bags(?) onto the corner of the pew/chair of every second or third row of the church, you can make it interesting as well as unique. My niece had a stunning aisle decoration of colour using saris. A special walkway can be created to suit the couple (ethnic background, special likes and interests as well as wedding theme.)

Don't forget the chairs for the bride and groom as well as the bridal party. Decorating them can add a special touch.

At the front of the church, you may wish to use tall stands for flower decorations or special candle holders and candles. When you are deciding on the 'look' consider the visual picture you are creating and think of height as well as width. Will you have a tiered effect with floral arrangements or just one on top of a tall stand? Are all your decorations up high? Consider balancing your decorations - this is especially important for the photos.

Another spectacular effect is to have backdrops on the stage where the wedding is being held. This can be backdrops of flowers or coloured fabric to give an effect. My friend's daughter had a magnificent display of red roses coming from the ceiling into the center of the stage, which was in the center of the seating. This was unique and beautifully done matching her red rose bouquet.

Reception

Reception Venue:

If you are at a wedding reception venue, make sure you discuss what decorations they include in the price of the venue. Often the chairs are covered especially for weddings and even table decorations can be a part of the reception package. Although this will add to the overall cost - it is one item you can tick off your wedding checklist.

You may still decide to be charge of these items and here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Inexpensive Centerpieces - here are some more cheap wedding decorations especially for your reception; You can simply create a stunning effect without a huge budget - using candles, flowers, candy jars, or a whole array of interesting vases. Includes 3 ideas for under $20 per table;
  • Even try creating your own vase with your theme idea. These can be done way in advance - make a fun day with your bridesmaids, glue, fun and simple ideas from a two dollar shop near your home (some discount store) and be creative and funky; Collect old and unusual vases from second hand stores.
  • Chairs - draping the chair with plain fabric and a neat, gold bow or ribbon is very effective.

However, if you are holding the reception in a hall, in your backyard, or a park, you will need to consider other decoration ideas.

A Hall:

If you are in a hall, the use of coloured fabric, balloons, ribbons and table decorations or centerpieces will be the way you set the atmosphere. Keep these things in mind as well as hiring options when opting for a cheaper wedding reception idea.

Backyard or Park

If you having your wedding reception outside, in a casual atmosphere - you may choose to have a 'picnic' theme with colourful rugs for your guests with their own picnic baskets of goodies. (Let your guests know what to expect). The park or outdoor setting may not need any decorations, but you may consider easy style decorations such as: candles in simple containers, hanging candles in trees, lanterns, umbrellas/marquees for shade or wet weather and solar lights.
