Homemade Laundry Detergent

Most store bought laundry detergents contain chemicals that are harmful for the environment. Plus, they're expensive. It's actually quite simple to make your own laundry detergent that works just as good as the store bought stuff, and it doesn't need to cost you as much.

To make your own laundry detergent you'll need the following:
8 cups grated Lightly or non-perfumed bar soap (Ivory works great)
12 cups Borax
8 cups Baking Soda

Grate the bar soap first. Then mix all the ingredients and store in a sealed container, like a plastic tub. You'll only need to use an eighth of a cup per full load of laundry.
You can also add essential oils such as lavendar or eucalyptus to your washing to make it smell great (and skip the dryer sheets).

This homemade laundry soap is low on suds, so is great for all washing machines, including front loading. You'll find that this costs a mere fraction of what it costs to buy laundry detergent from a store. Depending on how hard your water is, you may need to adjust the ingredients. Some people also add vinegar to the mix, which surprisingly doesn't cause your laundry to smell like vinegar.
