Dream of Clean - Month 4, Week 14 in the Kitchen

declutter your bedroom

Declutter

o through the condiments in your refrigerator. Toss out anything that is expired, sauces your family doesn't like, and bottles with a quarter-teaspoon of product left in them. In all likelihood you won't use, or get out, that little bit anyways.

Donate items in your pantry that you won't use. Tinned soups, spam, and fruit can all be taken to a food donation program where someone in need will make us of them. Food waste is a huge problem in Australia, and there are many people out there who struggle for balanced meals.

Organize

Organize your baking goods and spices. Label things that could be mistaken such as sugar and salt, or chili powder and cayenne and sort things in order to keep like items together. For example, keep curry spices, turmeric, coriander, and kaffir lime leaves together so that when you make a curry they're all readily available together.

Organize the compartments in your refrigerator. Keep vegetables and fruits separate in their correct crisper drawers. Keep hot sauces and salad dressings together, and make sure any items close to their expiration date are near the front of the refrigerator so they don't get forgotten. In a professional kitchen this is called FIFO (first in, first out).

Clean

Clean out the refrigerator. Go through each shelf in your fridge and dispose of expired food. If you have vegetables that are about to go, use them to make a vegetable stock or juice them. Most herbs can be processed and stored in ice cube trays in the freezer for later.

Clean fridge shelves. If it's been a while this will take longer than five minutes, but if you've been keeping on top of it this won't take long. Use a little soap and warm water and wipe the shelves and inside of the crispers and door to remove spilled food and crumbs.

Once a month do a freezer scan to see if there is any food that should be used up or thrown out. Some products are only good in the freezer for a certain amount of time and for this reason it's good to keep dates on frozen goods that don't display expiry dates
