Declutter for 5 minutes

by Marianne
(Australia)

If you seriously need to declutter, the whole process can be quite overwhelming!

However, if you just declutter for 5 minutes a day and focus on one spot at a time (like a shelf or window sill), the job still gets done, but it happens in small increments and you don't feel overwhelmed by it.

Anyhow, that's what I like to do!

Today I cleaned and tossed things on the top of my fridge (and wiped it!) - and it feels so much better!

One In and Two Out

When you buy something new, you should try to get rid of two old items.

Sometimes it is hard to think of what to get rid of because you like the look of it and you think "one day, I'll use it." However, if you have had it in your cupboard for at least 12 months, and haven't touched it, you won't notice that it is gone.

To feel better about getting rid of it, you can give it to a charity shop. Place it in a bag and put it straight in the car ready to drop off. If you don't, you'll be tempted to put it back on your shelf.

Getting rid of 2 items when you bring something new in the house, means you are decluttering one thing at a time.

"One In, Two Out!" - That's the way to go!

Tips for Decluttering Your Wardrobe

by Sophie
(UK)

Declutter

Declutter

When some-one told me we only ever wear less than 40% of what's in our closets that got me thinking. I spent an afternoon clearing out my wardrobe. What a difference it made!

Here's how you do it.

  1. Take everything out of the closet and lay it on the bed, and I mean everything!

  2. Take each item one by one and only put it back in the closet if a) You've worn it in the last 6 months and b) If it fits you

  3. Everything else can go to the charity shop

  4. If you can't bear to get rid of something. Put it away in the attic in a box or bag with the date on. If it's still there in a year you know it's safe to get rid of

  5. The exeption to this rule are special items like wedding dresses. You can pack these away safely so they don't take up space in your closet

  6. The clothes you put back in the closet should be in a logical order. Shirts all together, trousers all together etc. This makes them easy to find.

  7. Hopefully now you've got lots more space storage space!
